  1. Is your organization constituted so that participation by individual Internet users who are citizens or residents of countries within the Geographic Region in which your organization is based will predominate in your organization's operation?
    Yes.
  2. Describe your organization's constituents/membership (number, citizenship/location, defining characteristic - e.g. profession for professional societies):
    TERRE DES FEMMES has about 3,000 members. The members are predominantly German, but there is also a sizable number of other German-speaking members, i.e. Swiss and Austrian. Active membership is restricted to women and women are the majority of members, while men hold passive membership.
  3. Explain the eligibility requirements (if any) for your organization's constituents/membership (if you provide a written application for admission as a member, you may attach a copy):
    Every person who subscribes to our organization's goals can become a member. There are no particular eligibility requirements, but there is an annual membership fee.
  4. In what language/s does your organization conduct its business?
    Largely in German, but also in English as called for.

    Yes.
  6. Describe your organization's structure (e.g. governing and decision-making bodies and processes):
    The general assembly of all members is the highest decision-making body. It elects the executive board. The board members elect one representative among themselves who is the representative of the organization before the law. The board employs an executive director to supervise and run the organization's daily business. The executive director may attend the board meetings in an advisory function. City groups receive city group status upon successful application with the board and are chaired by coordinators.
  7. Does your organization commit to supporting its individual constituents'/membership's informed participation in ICANN?
    Yes.
  8. Describe how your organization keeps its constituents/membership informed about, and enables them to participate in, decisions regarding issues of interest:
    There are multiple communication channels: Mailing lists are run on the city group level as well as on an organization-wide level. There is a web site that is constantly updated (address see above). And there is a quarterly print publication, entitled "Menschenrechte für die Frau" (ISSN 1432-4563). Fundamental decisions are made by the general assembly of all members as described in 12., decisions of lesser import are made on the lower organizational levels, as appropriate.

Objectives

  1. What is your organization's primary goal or mission (please attach any mission or policy statement for your organization, if in writing, or provide a URL, if posted):
    TERRE DES FEMMES as a non-profit organization works to fight all forms of discrimination against women and all infringements on women's human rights that are perpetrated on the grounds of sex/gender, irrespective of the religious, political, ethnic and national background of the women. The organization furthermore undertakes to inform and educate the larger public about discrimination against women and to engage in direct aid initiatives on behalf of women.   2. What ICANN-related issues currently are of interest to your organization's constituents/membership:
    TERRE DES FEMMES has actively participated in the UN World Summit on the Information Society. With respect to Internet Governance, ICANN and the new Internet Governance Forum, we are interested in building the capacity of women to understand the issues and thus to raise the number of women who involve themselves in them. Concerning recent ICANN-related issues, the debate around the creation of the ".xxx" TLD has been of most interest to our organization's members.

    Yes.
