Description

  1. Is your organization constituted so that participation by individual Internet users who are citizens or residents of countries within the Geographic Region in which your organization is based will predominate in your organization's operation?
While membership of the organization is unrestricted to both individuals and organizations from any country, according to the Bylaws the mission of the organization is focused on Italian users; Societa' Internet is only active in Italy, and presently all of its members are citizens or residents of Italy.
  2. Describe your organization's constituents/membership (number, citizenship/location, defining characteristic - e.g. profession for professional societies):
The organization presently has 62 individual members (all citizens or residents of Italy) and two organizational members. It also has around 80 supporters, i.e. non-member individuals who participate to the organization's online forums.
  3. Explain the eligibility requirements (if any) for your organization's constituents/membership (if you provide a written application for admission as a member, you may attach a copy):
There are no requirements, except accepting the Bylaws of the organization and paying the membership fee.
  4. In what language/s does your organization conduct its business?
Italian (documents are sometimes translated in English).
  5. Provide support for the statement that your organization is self-supporting (by answering "yes" you confirm that it will not rely on ICANN for funding):
    Yes.
  6. Describe your organization's structure (e.g. governing and decision-making bodies and processes):
The organization is managed by a Council which is elected by the Assembly of the members and lasts three years. The Council is responsible for the ordinary management of the organization, while extraordinary issues (such as Bylaws amendments and yearly budget) require the approval of the Assembly of the members, which must be called at least once a year. Also, the Assembly elects a President, which represents the organization and chairs the Council; a Vice-President substitutes him when absent.
  7. Does your organization commit to supporting its individual constituents'/membership's informed participation in ICANN?
Yes. In fact, this kind of activity is among the primary objectives of the organization.
  8. Describe how your organization keeps its constituents/membership informed about, and enables them to participate in, decisions regarding issues of interest:
Societa' Internet communicates with its members primarily by e-mail, through the members' mailing list, the main discussion forum (which is open also to non-members) and specific working groups (one of which, since 2000, is devoted to ICANN and At Large issues), and also through its website. It also organizes conferences and events to inform and discuss about the developments of the Internet.
  9. Does your organization post on the Internet publicly-accessible, current information about your organization's goals, structure, description of constituent group(s)/membership, working mechanisms, leadership, and contact(s) (if this information currently is available, provide URLs)?
This information is provided through the organization's website at www.isoc.it.
  10. Provide information on your organization's leadership (leaders' names, positions, emails):
    President: Stefano Trumpy <presidente@xxxxxx>
    Vice-President: Mario Chiari <vp@xxxxxx>

    • to defend the right of access to the Internet by each person, organization or social entity while opposing any kind of discrimination in the usage and the management of the Internet;
    • to advocate the interests and needs of the Italian Internet users to the international community, and to promote the usage of the Italian language on the Internet.
  2. What ICANN-related issues currently are of interest to your organization's constituents/membership:
Monitoring and reporting about the entire activity of ICANN, and also participating in it and advocating the interests of the Italian Internet users, falls inside the primary mission of the organization.
